This has proved to be quite an interesting week. I went in to the doctor last Friday for what I thought was a pulled muscle. It turned out I was having contractions. After a few follow up appointments we learned that this little guy in my belly is really eager to meet the world sooner than he should.

I've been put on complete bedrest. For those who know my crazy schedule this is quite a drastic change. This not only means I've stopped teaching/directing children's theatre until next year... but all of my upcoming craft shows and classes have sadly been canceled/postponed. No more big belly's selling crafty goodness for now.

My emotions have been all over the place. I go from worrying about his health, to being selfishly sad about all I'll be missing out on (like Nick Cacciola and Jamie Price's wedding, aka The Wedding of the Century in NY, which we were supposed to attend at the end of the month), to being overwhelmed with gratitude because my family and friends have been so helpful and supportive, to feeling empowered by the choice to stay put and make the health of our new family most important.

The first night after learning about my new "condition" my friend Chris Shin posted this lovely video on Facebook with the comment "Breathing." While I know he had no idea what was going on in my life at the time, I could not believe how apropo this sweet little song was.

This has become our new theme song. Hang On Little Tomato!

Just hang on, hang on to the vine

And so I hold on to his advice
When change is hard and not so nice

A Few Felted Nursery Items

I've started making a few pieces for our little man's room. We're going with a Forest Theme - with a mid century modern flair. These pieces don't really hit on the MCM side of things, but there's more to come.

This first pic is of a needle felted Forest Mobile. I'm still going to do a few adjustments cause I'm worried some of these guys might be a bit creepy. Work in progress!

Here's a 30" x 20" wall hanging I needle felted with the help of my niece. She did the wool canvas which was super time consuming - so yay Jessica!

Search for the perfect nursery

One majorly weird thing about my pregnancy is that I've not been stressing about it AT ALL! I'm usually one to worry and get worked up, but little Frankie seems to have a somewhat calming effect on me. Maybe it's the cutting back on coffee.

That being said... I do need to get some sort of fire under my booty. Hubby and I keep saying we'll start making nursery, registry, and baby prep class decisions in September... which is just around the corner.

So, in honor of our approaching due date, here's a few images I'm hoping will inspire our nursery.

I love everything in Helen Dardik's etsy shop. I bought this print, and love it. (Although I do wish it were bigger) She has so many prints that I think would be perfect in a girls room... but might be a little too girly for our little mister.

And, of course - I'm loving Charley Harper these days. They carry several books and this memory game at one of my favorite shops... Otto in Downtown Fullerton. Planning a trip there again sometime soon.

Wonderful Wisconsin Wool!

While on a family trip to Wisconsin, we went to the County Fair to see our niece, Olyvia's blue ribbon winning 4H cow, Loosy Moosy.

After seeing her beautiful dairy cow, we headed toward the sheep. I met a lovely sheep shearer named Dan, who offered to give me 200 POUNDS of wool. He needed the space, and wanted it to go a happy home. WHAT!!!???

We called him the next day and took a quick field trip to his farm.

This was the only actual sheep he had onsite. She was too old to breed, and he saved her life by giving her a retirement plan. We got a giant bag of her wool in addition to a few bags from sheep of different breeds.

While we were taking pics, my amazing Mother-in-law spun up some of the wool in the car.

Here's some of the Leicester wool straight out of the bag.

Dan told us, we could gently unravel the wool and it would stay together in one piece. Then, we could easily remove the dirtier pieces. he was totally right!

Here's some wool from a Jacob sheep. I am so excited about these colors.

After we picked out the really dirty chunks, we used my in-laws mini vacuum to suck out the air so the bags would fit on the plane.

Such a fun adventure! I'm so glad we were able to thank the little Dorset for her wool. She gave a very loud "You're Welcome"

making a baby boy!

My blog and Molly Made craftiness slowed down there for a bit while I did my darndest to stay up past 9pm. But, I made it into the 2nd trimester and I'm getting my energy back.

While the little one has been baking I've managed to accomplish a few tasks

Co-Directed a Production of Into the Woods at www.TheMusicRoomTMR.com with EIGHTYSEVEN children.

Took a trip to San Fran to meet my adorable new niece.

Coreographed the Swing numbers in a production of "Swing!" at www.MacHaydnTheatre.org in Chattham NY. (which I was nervous about being prego... but it was amazing and seriously made everything feel so much better)

Made it to my dear friend Mark's 28 acre NY farm for an afternoon off.

Met up with great friends in NYC.

Spent a week assisting the summer production at The Music Room, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown

Taught a felted soap class to some of the kids on Mary Poppins tour which was in Orange County

And, tonight, I finally got back to my spinning wheel!

Tomorrow we head to Wisconsin for a music festival, and then round out the summer with the www.adbacademy.com recital and the Anaheim Performing Arts Center's big Great Gatsby themed 2 day fundraising event!

Now, my blog is all caught up! Hope to be posting some classes and shows soon.

2. I discovered the sweetest little shop in Fullerton called Belly Sprout! And I'll be teaching a Mommy and Me Felted Soap Making Class there on June 17th. Belly Sprout features organic eco friendly goodness for babies, toddlers and moms. And, they have the cutest Craft Show display ever!

This pic is from their website. I don't believe the stilt walkers were around when I saw them at Patchwork. But, they add a nice touch.

3. Molly Made will be joining forces with The Orange County School of Domestic Arts! This great group of crafters and cookers are here in the OC and ready to get domestic on you! There's so much to be gained by checking out this group.

Craft Show Wrap Up

I participated in two great craft shows last weekend. The Art Craw Experience (ACE) in Anaheim and Patchwork in Long Beach. I had such a great time spreading the knowledge of felt making and getting a few kiddos on the spinning wheel!

I was so happy with my new display grid. While it's not super quirky or eclectic... It is SO FUNCTIONAL! I love love love it. If you are in Orange County and looking for display pieces I highly recommend the Orange Pico Supply Store in Anaheim.

My cabaret at the Anaheim White House was this past Friday! It was a totally blast. I'm so happy to say I found a way to combine my love of PERFORMING and my love of CROCHETING. Check out this video to see how I Crocheted a Molly Made Dahlia while singing Twisted. I was so lucky to have such a great band lead by the amazing Dan Barrett.

I also brought in my love of TEACHING. I was joined by two of my students from The Music Room School of Performing Arts. We did a little Sondheim ditty, "Everybody Says Don't."

Happy as the Day is Long - help me choose a flyer

I've been busier than a 16 armed Octopus! So many great things on the horizon!

In addition to putting on productions of "Peter Pan", "Mary Poppins" and "Into the Woods" and teaching all around town... I've also been working on a show of my own at the Anaheim White House. It's set for April 22nd. Just around the corner!

The show titled "Happy as the Day is Long" has a kickin band, 3 great guest artitsts, AND a 3 course meal. And, to top it all off, a super talented friend designed flyers!

I'm planning on using both flyers, but I'd like to choose one to use for advertising with people who I don't know. I'd love your help deciding between the two.

Carol Channing comes to Anaheim

A really great gem of an event is about to happen in Anaheim! As some of you know, I'm on the board of the Anaheim Performing Art Center Foundation. (you can find out more about APAC at www.apacf.org) Well, APAC is super excited to be co-producing a concert celebrating Carol Channing's 90th birthday! AND - SHE WILL BE PERFORMING! As will some top notch BWAY talent, and Musical Theatre University's Kids Next Door.

I'm sure you all have your own favorite Carol Channing memories. Mine are a little random, so I thought I'd share in an effort to spark your excitement. It might seem super weird - but (being a child of the 80's) I LOVED her as the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland. Here's a clip if you haven't seen it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrjIVhIeGnw. Crafting Parties?

Those of you who know me, or who have read this blog, know that I love kiddos! I'm super lucky to teach roughly 20 dance/singing/fiber classes a week here in Orange County.

I've really enjoyed teaching Fiber Arts at www.SuzoosWoolWorks.com. For the past few months I've been teaching home schooled kids to create all kinds of crafts with wool.

After an evening with some friends that turned into a night of non stop felting, I've been toying with the idea of bringing crafting parties to you! I'm still working out the details, but I wanted to see what you all thought. Would you or your kids enjoy a felt making party? I'd bring kits with instructions and each guest would leave with a little felted critter or a sweet smelling soft bar of felted soap.

Ever since my good friend and super talented designer pointed out the giant felt piece in the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln center about a year ago, I've been obsessed with Claudy Jongstra. I had been in that room before and always thought it was a painting. But, it's so much more. The walls are COVERED with beautiful hand died, handmade felt. It still takes my breath away every time I get a grilled cheese sandwich and chickpea salad at Witchcraft.

Well, yesterday, Melissa sent me a picture of a gorgeous rug not realizing it was made by Claudy. It sent me back to her website, www.claudyjongstra.com and I'm obsessed all over again. Check out these pictures of her process. So insane. Can we please take a trip to the neatherlands and help her tend her flock of rare Drenthe Heath sheep?

Debut of my new display racks, and some Knotted Goodness

I can hardly believe I am actually doing THREE SHOWS this week!

The first was a private Trunk Show at a beautiful home. I had never done a show like this before. It was a total blast! Very sweet vendors, and such nice customers! I was one of the few who sold handmade goods, so I was a little nervous at first. It was quite a success!

I always learn so much at these shows. Last night I learned that SPINNING DISPLAY RACKS ARE GREAT! I just purchased two styles online from this site www.storesupply.com/. Super affordable, and easy to assemble. I got a large free standing version, and a short table version.

ONE BIT OF ADVICE - I'd definitely bring a screwdriver with you to your show if you get a display rack like this. I thought I had secured the stands before I left my house, and somehow a few screws came loose. Go figure. I borrowed a screwdriver from the home owner, but I should have brought my own.

Last night was also the debut of a new piece. My Knotted Goodness loose circle scarves make me so happy and I was so glad to know they have the same affect on others! Wrapping up in Yummy Yarn is basically heavenly to me. Here's a few of the pieces I sold last night.

My needle felted pumpkin workshop at The Sheared Sheep Yarn Shop was a huge success. 12 people showed up and each pumpkin was adorable and unique!

Fibery Pumpkins in all sizes are so sweet. I think they'll be perfect for our Thanksgiving Table! You can get them too at Patchwork in Long Beach on the Sunday the 21st!

Peppermint Headband Tutorial

The peppermint headbands we used in Willy Wonka this summer at The Music Room School of Performing Arts were a total hit. With Halloween and Christmas quickly approaching, I thought you might want to make one of your own. Here's a little tutorial to help.

MATERIALS

(These can be found at your local craft store, or at the links I've provided)

Glitter Foam Sheets 1 Red and 1 White

Styrofoam Disk (this link is for a 1"/3" disc... but a larger disc can be used for a louder look)

Fabric Covered Headband

Scissors

And a good old Glue Gun

Cut 2 circles (one red and one white) about 1.5 inches larger than your styrofoam circle. Specific measurements are not needed here, you will trim edges at end.

Fold red circle in half and then in half again.

Take two folded corners and fold them back toward main folded edge.

These folds will give you a cutting guide without measuring. Yay!

Cut along each fold without cutting all the way through the circle. Leave about 1 inch across between each slice. Triangles will be slightly uneven. This is good. It gives each peppermint it's own personality.

Cut off every other triangle with a flat edge. Triangles will not come to a point. Glue red piece to white circle.

Make a small cut (about 1.5 inches) into the white circle along the side of each red piece.

Fold and glue the white edges down. They will overlap.

Fold and glue red triangles own and trim edges along bottom of styrofoam.

Glue Peppermint to the side of fabric covered headband.

Place on your own head, or on the head of a real cute kid.

Craftiness and Musical Theatre Come together to make Willy Wonka Magic.

You might remember this post about the performing arts studio I went to as a kid. It's called The Music Room and I am so lucky to have grown up in such a supportive loving fun environment. They are now in their 25th year and running stronger than ever. Now, I'm back at The Music Room as a teacher/director.

The production of Willy Wonka Jr. I co-directed and choreographed opened last night at the Fairmont Private School in Anaheim. They were serious Rock Stars!

We have 2 more shows and they are almost sold out!

With only three weeks to put up the show, we did some seriously collaborating. Here's how we made a few of the tricky sets and costumes work...

CANDY GIRLS! I'll Be posting a tutorial on these headbands soon.

Wonka with a giant Molly Made needle felted flower with wool from Suzoos Wool Works.

AGUSTUS! The first ticket winner! Our fantastic set designer David built a giant TV that sat on stage right thru the entire first act. It worked very well. Especially when Augustus leapt out of the screen to steal a kiddos candy.

Happy Birthday Charlie! I love our little Bucket family and their newspaper birthday hats!

Varuca Salt wins a golden ticket!

There's no Knowing when you are on Board the USS Pink! We used a strobe light, black light and disco lights to create this creepy effect.

Violet! You're turning Violet Violet! We used a Blow up Pumpkin Costume underneath this blue fabric. I can't believe how well it worked! Our parent volunteers are the best!

Oompa Lompas! In the Lion Brand Yarn wigs they made all by themselves!

SQUIRRELS! These tails really worked after lots of hemming and hawing. There are little slits cut in the back of their hoodies and an elastic band is slipped thru and tied at the waist. They had to quick change out of their Oompa cotumes... hence the green tights : )

So much has happened in the past few months. A cross country move, bridal shower, several new jobs, my first California craft show, a bachelorette weekend in wine country piles of house guests, and a wedding! I've tried to blog about bits of this all... but a few weeks before our wedding... it all just because too much.

We had a beyond amazing time at the wedding, and as soon as family left, we both went right back into work. SO looking forward to our honeymoon in August. As things start to settle down, I'm hoping to post a few bits of joy and inspiration a week.

Wipe Your Hands... On Your Skirt!

I have this Anthropologie dishtowel hanging in my kitchen. I love it.

BUT I DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO WALK INTO MY BRIDAL SHOWER!

Jen was my roommate for 3 years. She is the craziest crafter I know. I don't know why she doesn't have a blog or a website or a full blown company.

How amazing is this skirt! I've seen her make skirts out of towels and napkins in the past, but this is my favorite so far. This shower had a vintage kitchen theme. Jen wins best dressed with this inspired skirt.

She also makes amazing cards. She really needs to sell them. Someday, when I open a working craft studio, I hope she'll teach a class. Her cards are always a holiday highlight.

She is also President of the International Special Events Society of Los Angeles and the Special Events Coordinator for the Catalina Conservancy. And... I wonder why she doesn't have a blog/website/company. Ha! I don't know how she finds the time.

A Week of My Crazy Crafty Friends!

My amazing sister who tumbles brilliant things here threw me a bridal shower this week with the help of my Mom, my Aunt, and four of my amazing Bridesmaids.

Not only was I reminded of how amazingly creative and inspired my sister is. I was blown away by my friends. So, this week, I'm posting about their bits of crafty loveliness!

First things first -

My sis planned a Vintage Kitchen themed shower - which, couldn't have been a more perfect theme.

Ashley Anklets - My solution to the Socks and Heels Dilemma

I often think about the silly questions I've asked throughout my life. When I was a kid, I remember being cast in a production at The Music Room School of Performing Arts and asking if I should wear lacy socks with my heels. It was clearly ridiculous cause adults didn't wear lacy socks with heels, and I would be playing an adult part in a children's theatre production. I learned that I should wear tights with heels, and didn't look back.

Then...

Roughly ten years ago, I went to England on a theatre tour with my college theatre department. On our flight home, something magical happened. Dancer in the Dark had just been released and they played it on our plane. Mid trip we realized Bjork was actually on our plane, in first class and in the flesh. I will always remember sobbing my brains out as I watched that amazing movie, knowing she was on the flight with us. Pretty surreal.

I will also always remember seeing her in the airport waiting for her luggage. She had little ribbons tied around her ankles. I've seen millions of anklets, but this was different because she had the same ribbon on each ankle. I fell in love with the idea. I know she can be 100% crazy with her fashion choices, but this was super duper cute.

A few years later, while working on a cruise ship, I frequently sported this Bjork inspired fashion choice. Loved it.

Now...

I've been thinking a lot about this "wearing socks with heels" trend that seems to be back in style. I busted out a pair of socks to wear with my heels last time I was in New York, and I realized:

A - It makes heels much more comfortable. Especially for walking all over NYC.

B - It draws attention to the ankle, and therefor the shoe. And... I happen to love several pairs of shoes, so drawing attention to them is not a bad thing.

BUT... I don't know if I'm always going to want to go for the whole sock in heel thing because:

A. It covers up a new pedicure (when and if I take the time to get one)

B. I wanted ruffled socks in a last minute fashion decision and couldn't find them anywhere near our apartment in NYC. I ended up going with plain ankle crew socks which worked, but left me a little unfulfilled. (I eventually found them here a few days later and have since seen them all over the internet... but still at the time it was a fashion emergency left resolved)

C. I don't want to be mistaken for one whose wearing socks with birkenstocks.

The cons started to outweigh the pros in the Socks and Heels Dilemma.

I needed a solution.

I turned to my trusty crochet hook for inspiration, and decided I needed to crochet JUST the ruffled trim of the lacy sock. Take the childhood sense of sockwear and combine it with what I learned from Bjork so many years ago.

While Mulling over this design in my head I read SnaggleTooth'dTrippleStep's recent blog post about socks and heels. I knew something needed to be done... soon.

Knowing that Miss TrippleStep's Bridal Shower was approaching I thought this'd be the perfect time to bring these beauties into existence. So... I put these together for her and I'm totally in love.

I loved them so much... I even made myself a pair!

Expect to see these in all sorts of shades on the shelves of my shop.

FPSC - A TUTORIAL ON FRONT POST SINGLE CROCHET STITCHES

I've been working on a pattern for my Dahlia-lightful design for quite sometime now. It uses a type of stitch that I haven't seen explained anywhere. As I mulled it over, I redesigned the flower a bit, and came up with this sweet little headband/lariat and this vintage inspired fascinator. I am now ready to publish patterns for both designs. Yahoo! (find the pattern here!)

In both patterns I use a stitch I would call a Front Post Single Crochet (fpsc) stitch. It is similar to the more commonly used Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) stitch. As I explored this stitch, I was amazed by how infrequently it seems to be used. While fpdc was one of the first "different" stitches I learned (I was quite obsessed with giant fpdc afghans about 10 years ago), I'm currently excited about the possibilities of the fpsc.

It creates another level of crochetable stitches that are sturdy and lie flush up against the horizontal fabric with out the space created by a fpdc. So... here's a little tutorial I put together on a stitch I've been using for quite sometime, that I think can open new possibilities for a new direction in crochet.

So get out your hook at try adding a fpsc into your day! : )

Here's my definition of a FPSC -

Front post single crochet (fpsc) – Keep hook in front of piece, insert hook from right to left around post of indicated stitch (figure 1), YO (figure 2) and draw up a loop(figures 3 and 4), YO (figure 5) and draw through both loops on hook (figure 6).

This is a dc being worked into the previous fpsc. Because fpsc's are shorter than fpdc it could be tempting to go into the st from 2 rows before (where my thumbnail is). Make sure you go into the stitch that looks like it is in the back.

See how the fpsc rows add a flat vertical playing field. You can now start crocheting a whole new piece of fabric right to these fpsc stitches.

These stitches were worked into the previous row of dc stitches.

In the middle, I alternated a row of fpsc with a row of dc.

Again the fpsc rows add a flat vertical playing field.

These stitches were worked into the previous row of sc stitches.

This swatch is made with 3 rows of sc, 6 rows of alternating sc and fpsc followed by 3 rows of sc.

***This is my first tutorial and it is dedicated to Ash who didn't know how to do a fpsc. I think there are a lot of people out there who don't know how to make a fpsc. I hope this helps.

I've been seriously MIA and here is why...

WE'VE MOVED TO CALIFORNIA!

Exactly one month ago we drove a packed U-haul and drove across the country. I have officially spent the past 4 years living out of a suitcase jumping from theatre to theatre and it feels so great to know I'll be in one place for awhile.

We pulled from our vast knowledge of living on the road to make this trip as easy as possible. Here's a few of the choices that made this trip the most bearable (even enjoyable) yet.

1. PRICELINE PRICELINE PRICELINE! - We mapped out the cities we wanted to stay in and then "pricelined" a hotel the night before. If the image of William Shatner has scared you away in the past... Put it behind you and use Priceline for last minute trips. It was a lifesaver! We bid 1/2 price on 3 star hotels and every single hotel was spectacular.

2. WHOLE FOODS - After my minor breakdown on our last trip (which JD lovingly calls the onion ring breakdown). We decided eating at Burger King twice in one day is no longer an option. So, we googled Whole Foods and stopped at their salad bar when possible. A giant tub of sesame kale left us much happier than burgers and onion rings.

3. AUDIO BOOKS - I mean, this is a no-brainer... but it really does help. We listened to Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. So glad to have finally experienced both stories.

4. A NEW CROCHET TECHNIQUE - I knew I had loads and loads of time to dedicate to a new knit or crochet project. I'd been playing with Linked Stitches which lead me to dive back into figuring out Tunisian Crochet. I have played around with Tunisian Crochet, but never completed a project. I ended up making a shrug that I really love! The trick to making this technique appealing to me was using a much larger hook than usually used for the yarn. It took some time for me to find my own Tunisian style... but time was the one thing I had.

It's taken me awhile to come back to the online craft community but I'm back and I have lots to share.

Happy Crochet Month!

   In honor of my favorite yarny art form. I've decided to take on an idea inspired by Robin at CrochetByFaye. She suggested adopting a fellow crochet designer. You can read more about her idea here... try it!

   I am really bad at following patterns. I mean, I know how to follow patterns. But, I just don't take the time to sit down and stick to it! So... I'm setting a goal. I've picked two hats, that I am going to sit down and make by the end of the month. I'll be posting pics once they are finished.

A NEW SKOODIE!

This pic was taken backstage in our greenroom and it's a little silly - but you get the idea. I really love that I am sitting next to a pile of toilet paper! (ooops) This new piece this made with 2 different types of yarn and it is so squishy! I don't want to give it up! It's a custom order bday gift. I hope she loves it as much as I do!

As soon as I took my Skoodie's off of my etsy site - custom orders started rolling in. So I gave in. Skoodie's are again available here in my shop. You can't fool mother nature. It's a cold one out there and we still need help staying warm for at least another month or so.

I officially just shipped 3 giant boxes full of yarn and chunky knitwear to California. Once this show closes we are headed to NYC, packing up our apartment and MOVING TO CALI! We'll still be back in NYC often, so don't you worry.

In an effort to make the transition as smooth as possible... I've decided to slowly clear my chunky winter items from the Molly Made shelves. I'll be replacing the skoodies and neckwarmers with light springy pieces of wooly wonderment.

Keep an eye out for Felted Flowers, Ladybugs, and Cherries like these from last year...

And... Look for my new crocheted Lariat Headband/Necklaces - they are already a hot item in my etsy shop!

First of all. I'm the luckiest girl in the world! I'm marrying the funniest, most caring person on the planet.

We are getting married June 19th! I'm so excited about the party we are planning. In honor of Chuchie Wuchie Face day. Here's a few of our ideas.

We are working with a really great team at Stephanie Grace Design It's been tricky since we are working in Wisconsin right now and will be heading back to NYC in March. Parnell and Stephanie have been super helpful. If you are in Santa Monica, check out their new shop.

We new right away we wanted a "Rob and Laura Petrie Wedding." If you've never seen the Dick Van Dyke show. You can catch episodes on Hulu. It is the BEST sitcom.

We were torn between a NYC wedding and California wedding. We've decided to go head and do both! (kinda) We'll have a ceremony with family and a few friends in Cali and then, a reception at a bar in NYC. For now, we're focusing on the California part. We've picked the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood as our venue. It's historic and beautiful. The clientele might be a little too "hollywood" for us. But, we're packing the place with our loved ones, so it'll be just right. The first Oscars were held here, and the decor is all original. Pretty. Dang. Cool.

I will be crocheting little flowers that will be sprinkled thru out my bouquet of red Dahlias and Roses. I have not decided on a yarn or pattern yet - but here's a few ideas. Eventually I will use real pearls.

We had our Save The Dates designed by my favorite Etsy seller, Kate Gabrielle at www.flapperdoodle.etsy.com

We then printed right on to the back of the cards ourselves. (JD actually did this all on his own... YAY for him) It took us a little time to get it all lined up perfectly, but it was fairly easy and turned out just like we wanted. I found little embellishments at Target (which totally surprised me) and they added such a nice touch.

Kate also surprised me with "Will you be my Bridesmaid?" cards. They are now for sale in the stationary section of her site. Love them!

Once we were ready to ship we had our own stamps made at www.pictureitpostage.com It was super easy and they arrived in a few days. I'm aware that having stamps made of yourself is super dorky, so we chose this great dorky pic from a photo booth. When our Save the Dates arrived our loved ones instantly knew they were from us. : ) We still have a few more to send, and hopefully that will happen soon.

The last litle bit to share is our officiant. After some major hemming and hawing (and a little freaking out on my part) we came up with the PERFECT officiant!

While on tour with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang I was luck enough to be partnered up with the beautiful, talented, loving, honest, ridiculously funny Tim Hughes. JD and I ended up sharing housing with TIm in Orlando and Orange County. Tim was always so supportive and excited about each and every wedding discussion we had. We know Tim understands and believes what we believe and stand for, and we know there is no one more perfect to help us make this commitment to each other. We asked Tim in a sneaky way while playing a game called "mail man" and we are so happy he has agreed!

I can't wait to someday help Tim plan his own wedding.

Sooooo this is what we are working on. There's more to share, wedding party, an 8 year old singing superstar, flowers etc... but I think we are off to a pretty good start!

Eureka! The search for the perfect Vintage Cocktail Dress (A Heavenly Tuesday Part II)

After my successful trip to Loop I skipped my way over to ReThreads. I was headed there with a mission. I'm doing a 50's and 60's musical review. It's a great show, but we ran into one little problem with costuming. The 4 girls wear 50s/60s coctail dresses for many numbers. When we started I had a beautiful vintage green dress. It looked lovely with the Pink, Yell, and Blue dresses the other girls were wearing.

Unfortunately as we got closer to opening the show, the seams started to literally melt away. Even in places were the dress was not tight at all, the thread was falling apart. It was just too old, too well loved. It would have taken forever for the stitches to be replaced, so a new dress needed to be found. The bummer was, it was too late to run around to vintage clothing stores and find a perfect fit (especially when I don't have the darn 26 inch waist most of these 1950's girdled women seem to have). So, something had to be pulled from stock.

I totally understand why this happened, but the result was a bummer. I ended up in a frumpy patterned dress which looked silly compared to the other girls. I didn't say anything, I wore the dress and did my job. BUT after hearing how BAD I looked on stage from not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 times by 4 SEPARATE PEOPLE! I new something had to be done.

1. Our music director, who I love, told me it looked like a potato sack (I felt better about that when i saw the second episode of this seasons Project Runway)

2. A patron said "all of the other girl looked so beautiful! But you, not so beautiful."

3. A friend came and saw the show and she said "What the heck is wrong with your costumes. You look awful."

4. Family members came and agreed it was horrible. Especially the back was super saggy. (I hadn't even seen the back)

4.5 - Also - I do have to say he had tact - but our director said "Is that what you are wearing??" I smiled and said "Yeeeeesss." He replied, "It's a lovely dress, but it's not quite right."

And thus... MY MISSION BEGAN.

After heading to 4 different vintage clothing stores and leaving empty handed I found the home run dress at ReThreads in Milwaukee! I could not believe how perfectly it fit. It had long sleeves which was a little weird... but Aja Heuss (our ASM) removed the sleeves and placed the cuff buttons on the shoulders! I am now soo excited to put on this costume. Yahoo!!!

A Heavenly Tuesday

2 weeks ago JD had a recording gig in Milwaukee so I was lucky enough to spend the day exploring 3 of my favorite things... coffee, yarn, and vintage clothing... I couldn't believe these three things all existed in one little strip mall a few blocks from his recording studio...

While at Altera Coffee I enjoyed a beautiful 16 oz triple skim 1 pump mocha (my current drink of choice) and a breakfast burrito (my eternal breakfast of choice). Altera also has amazing Espresso Milkshakes if you ever get a chance. I then made my way to Loop. I had an order to fill and needed some lux green yarn. I found exactly what I needed...

******** A bit about Loop - I've been there before and it is a truly lovely shop. Very Knit AND Crochet friendly, and also needle felting materials (which I love). It reminds me of a bigger Purl Soho in NYC or oddly enough Loop in Philly. All three shops are crisp and white and neatly organized. My only complaint is that they don't have a swift or a yarn winder. I had such a lovely time in the shop (I was there for about an hour comparing green yarns) and I really wanted to start working with the blue sky right away. I was totally bummed when they said they didn't wind yarn. Yes, I can do it by hand, and yes I have my own swift at home... but having at least one skein wound on the spot is such a simple basic finishing touch to a LYS experience.

Tour De Yarn Continues!

I've now been back in Wisconsin for exactly a month. I've already hit some amazing yarn shops. I'll fill you in over the next few days. Here's the first shop we went to in Delavan, called Needles and Pins.

Lindsey (another yarn head) took us to this spot, and Katie (a non yarn head) was great and came along for the ride.

I love this barn! This is the Parking lot for the shop... what? So great.

They had some great finds, but mostly I was excited about the GIANT barn out in front, and the fact that they keep their yarn in baby beds. What a beautiful useful idea! I love it!

Way to Go 2010!

So, the year has just started and already, 2 wildly different kick butt pieces of news to share.

First - I'm lucky enough to say I have some seriously talented, hard working friends. On the 28th of December at 2pm a cast of 9 singers, 8 band members, a director, stage manager, costume designer, sound designer and a 3 person crew got together to put on a show at the Fireside Dinner Theatre in Fort Atkinson, WI. The show was conceived by our Director, Ed Flesch, who was also a member of the cast. This would usually seem like a normal task for all of us but here's the kicker... the show went up on New Years Eve. That's 2.5 days to put on a full 2 Act 2.5 hour show in a 700 seat theatre.

I don't know how - but we did it! And... it was actually pretty fantastic. Only a few little word flubs here and there, but I can say without a doubt both of our full houses had a great time, and so did we. Here's a few pics from the crazy day.

And - my second bit of news...

So - I wake up this morning, clearly EXHAUSTED. We get ready and head to spend a nice day off with JD's family. On the way to their house we stop to look for a book for his mom. She's also an avid knitter and has been wanted to knit a top down raglan sweater for his dad. I found a book that looked just right called Knit on Down. It has several patterns that are mostly seamless and mostly knit from the top down. Done and done. As we head to the register, I tell JD I want to stop by the magazine section.

SIDE NOTE - A few weeks ago, after announcing to my Molly Made Facebook group that my Doggie Shrug pattern is now available at www.redheart.com, Drew Emborsky (aka The Crochet Dude) mentioned there was a Doggie Shrug used as a full page add in the Jan/Feb issue of Crochet Today. I honestly thought he was mistaken. I was a little sad and thought someone else must have written a Doggie Shrug pattern. I often buy this crocheting magazine, but I don't subscribe because I spend so much time on the road doing shows. It's hard to have magazines forwarded all over the country. I've looked for it in several shops, but had yet to find the Jan/Feb edition.

So, we stopped by the craft/hobbie magazine section of this Barnes and Noble in Milwaukee. I gave JD one copy and I took one copy. I started slowly page by page, he quickly leafed through and... BAM! There's a giant pic of my Doggie Shrug on the inside of the back cover! I seriously freaked out!! I screamed and jumped up and down. I have got to be the biggest dork in the world!

It's an add for Red Heart Yarn which is a great tried and true brand you can get mostly anywhere. My name isn't even listed by the picture - but I could care less! I'm seriously so honored and excited to see that they are using something I created. I also have a pattern for Flower Petal Leg Warmers available on their website and I have a secret pattern coming out on another website... so I know this is just the beginning. I do wonder if, some day, seeing my piece in a mag will be old hat, but I will never forget how unbelievably excited I was to see my first piece in print. Knowing it is in book stores and yarn shops all over the country, sends me over the moon.

I had JD take some pictures of me with the magazine before I bought a few copies. I do think it is really hilarious to compare the pic of me in my Goldfinger costume to the pic of me in my tragic day after the show get up. (I love this giant knit Anthropologie sweater.) Oh the "glamorous" life of an actress with an addiction to yarn.

I can't believe it took so long to find! Maybe I was meant to find it today as a way to kick off the new year.

Loads of fun was had at Molly Made's latest craft show. It was a little slow at first, but ending up being quite a hit. I mean really, I would NOT have been there at 10am either if I wasn't working. Wish I had taken a pic of the table and my GORG new table cloth, but you'll have to wait til my next show Dec 13th, Winter Blast in Astoria!

I'm most excited about my new Skoodie (hooded scarf). It has a rounded hood like a hat, a really long scarf with giant tassels! It's crocheted with two yarns, one big fluffy stand , and one super shiny textured strand.

I've been swamped - so here's a quick update...

My first craft show was such a success! I couldn't be happier with how it wall turned out! Loads of friends came in waves which really helped attract attention to my booth. It was freezing but DIDN'T RAIN so everyone was interested in handmade warming up items.

Thanks to everyone who stopped and shopped, my amazing friends, The New New etsy group (especially Lenny Mud, Nordea's Soaparie and Groundsel), my partner in crochet crime...Tepperwear, and my fantastic partner in everything Mr. Dominguez. I couldn't have done it without all of you!

I know I'm making a big deal out of all of this, but it was my first time, so I'm geekishly excited.

I have been crazy busy and loads of blog ideas have been flying through my head. Today, however, I came across something that I HAD to blog about NOW.

My ridiculously cool sister forwarded me an email from a mutual friend. The subject of this email was "Do you know what a Yurt is?" I knew it sounded familiar and as I read the email I remembered I had recently heard about Yurts. First, at the Fashioning Felt exhibit I blogged about a few weeks ago, and in one of the many CraftyPod episodes I listened to this weekend.

According to Wikipedia "A yurt is a portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed dwelling structure traditionally used by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia." For a more detailed description check out the full entry.

I read the email and instantly teared up with excitement! Kate Poko rny is embarking on an amazing task. She is going to CROCHET A FULL SIZED YURT!

"Historically, Mongolian nomads made felt for their yurts via a labor intensive process that still required an internal structure at the end of the day.

My project is to take that design a step further and make a locally-sourced (local to New Hampshire), self-supporting crocheted yurt out of hand-felted cording approximately 1.5 – 2 inches thick."

Her process looks so fantastic!

After felting the cord she realized that it would take a tree sized hook so she's decided to crochet the yurt with her HANDS. I've been made fun of by my family for crocheting a hat with my fingers. So, I can't wait to tell them someone else is as crazy as I am.

The Ideal Local Yarn Shop

Opening a Local Yarn Shop(LYS) of my own has been on my mind and in my heart. I've dreamt about it for quite some time. Lately, I feel the dream tugging, tugging. tugging... OPEN OPEN OPEN. When something pulls that hard, I think it should be paid some attention. Several signs have been put in my path telling me this is something I should seriously look into and soon!

I've made steps towards making this dream a reality. I attended a great conference through the Crochet Guild of America. I've sold several pat

tern designs to two different nation wide yarn companies. I finally signed up to sell my own hand made items at a craft fair. I've made wonderful con

nections with professionals through blogs and social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. And, I have visited about 20 different yarn shops around the US and Canada and even Spain.

Perhaps the most helpful tool I have used to find information has simply been speaking to yarn shop owners and friends who knit and crochet. When ever I meet someone who has the slightest idea of how to own, shop in, or appreciate a yarn shop, I tell them I'm looking to open one of my own. I ask millions of questions, and have gotten some great advice. The advice that

seems most prevalent is "IT'S VERY DIFFICULT!"

So, I figure, GREAT! I'm am never afraid of a challenge! Nothing about pursuing a career in musical theatre is easy. However, with the help of some very supportive people, I have had a career in musical theatre. After getting my Equity card, I worked as a singing waiter for a little over a year, and then I started booking work... consistently. I have worked successfully as an actor for four years now. I am very proud of this accomplishment and I've loved (almost) every second of the journey. But, I can't help but notice my passions are pulling me in a different direction. I know I will never want to stop performing completely, I just might want to change my focus. I find when I'm on the road, nothing makes me happier or helps me to feel more at home than when I step into a Local Yarn Shop.

Now, what am I accomplishing with this post?

I've been to LYSs of over the country and I've started to get a feel for what I want in a shop of my own. As of now, it's all a bunch of mumbo jumbo floating around in my head and heart. Today I'm going to begin a list of everything I hope my shop will embody. I'd LOVE feed back and comments on what type of a shop you most enjoy. What turns you on about your favorite LYS? What turns you off? You've never been in a yarn shop?? Tell me what makes you happiest about your favorite independently owned clothing shop, paint store, shoe store, coffee shop. Anything that makes you happy (or unhappy) about a small retail shop will help.

Here's my list and I'll continue updating as I discover or rediscover ideas that will help describe my ideal LYS.

MY IDEAL YARN SHOP WOULD HAVE...

Clean organized shelves

Organize yarn by weight and then color then fiber

Enough, but not too much yarn - lots to choose from but not so

much that it is overwhelming

Clearly labeled prices (this is a big one for me)

Encourage cross crafting (knitting, crocheting, felting, using yarn with glue or playdough if it works)

Greet each customer as they come in the door in a jovial relaxed encouraging manner

Offer project and technique classes

Offer one on one and group classes

Offer some classes that span over a few weeks and some that are completed in just one day so that people who travel for work still have an opportunity to take class

Craft and coffee nights

Afternoon crafting tea

Men's night

Family crafting groups

Handmade items for sale

Feeling the Felt

Crochet Guild of America

I recently joined the Crochet Guild of America. What a great decision! I went to their conference in Buffalo and had a fantastic time. My head is spinning with loads of information. I attended the Professional Development day, took 4 classes, and met several professional crochet designers and teachers.

Here's a few highlights from the week...

JD came with me to help with the drive and to keep me company when the classes were not in session. But, while I was at the conference, I was on my own. I had made a few connections through Ravelry, and Twitter, but I was still pretty nervous. One of the main connections I had made was with a woman named Jocelyn Sass. (she is known as CuteCrochet on Twitter) She has been a super cheerleader via twitter, but I had no idea she would turn out to be such a Crochet Angel! Jocelyn took such great care of me and explained any goofy question I had with such kindness and intelligence, introduced me to several lovely people (including Wendy Cozby who is with us in this pic) and helped me connect with many designers and editors.Her help on the design front helped me to SELL several pattern designs to two different companies! I'll have more news on that once things are official.

The first and last classes I took were with Edie Eckman. First I attended her

hour long talk about Designing for Publication during Professional Development Day, and I also took her class called "Unlearn to Knit." I highly recommend both classes. Submitting for publication is definitely a different beast than submitting for an audition. And, after taking her Knitting class, I really feel like I am in control of my stitches. I can actually tell what I am creating with the yarn and the needles, rather than just doing what someone else told me to do. In this picture, Edie is holding one of her books called, The Crochet Answer Book. A book I happen to love and had with me on the road for all 9 months of the Chitty tour. Pretty cool : )

This next picture is with Myra Wood. I sat in on her seminar on Self Publication at Professional Development Day and, took her class on Free Form Crocheted Lace. The info she had to Share about Self Publication was so empowering. I have lists of websites and computer

programs to go through. I have had book ideas in the past, and knowing I can easily publish my ideas myself makes the idea of publishing more of a reality. On Friday I took her class on Free Form Crocheted Lace. Boy, oh boy, was this the class for me. For a long time, I've known that my love for crochet is found in the freedom of knowing I don't really need to follow a pattern. I can follow patterns, but I much prefer to make things up as I work through the piece. This class was like a key to the world of crochet I'd been looking for. My first few pieces were a little funky, but I can see how easy and liberating this style of crochet can be. I also learned that Myra lives in Southern California. If my crazy dream of opening my own shop in So. Cal. becomes a reality, I am so happy to have her as a connection. I can't wait to set up Myra Wood knitting and crocheting workshops in my own shop.

And, here we have... The C rochet Dude! Drew Emborksky (The Crochet Dude) was the MC for the Professional Development Day. He also set up a warm welcome meeting for new members of the guild. Drew and I actually have a funny history. I follow him on Twitter, and while I was in Houston with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, he tweeted about coming to see the show! I wrote him back and said, "No way! I'm in the show!" We talked a bit about the show and that was that. Then, at the annual CGOA meeting, I won a raffle prize. I went up to get my prize, and in true goofy Mahoney fashion, I decided to give a good ol' showgirl kick to the face. Clearly this was out of the ordinary in the world of Crochet. I had not yet introduced myself to Drew, but saw him almost die laughing. I had not planned on pulling out a high kick, but it proved to be the perfect reason to introduce myself and remind him that I was in the cast of Chitty. Drew was super supportive and gave me some great tips about the "designer meet and greet" that I attended on the Saturday morning. If our shop plans come to fruition, I'll definitely be asking Drew to come to Cali as well.

These are just a few of the talented people I met at the convention. Now that I'm home I feel like I'll never have time to actually put into action all that I learned. But, shoot, I'm gonna try. I'll end this post with a few links that I picked up this weekend. I can't wait till the next CGOA week. I feel like I fell in a rabbit hole that took me to a Wonderland of Yarny Goodness. The world is curiouser and curiouser, and boy is it grand.

This website is updated frequently with a free pattern and an audio fashion show! I had a great meeting with Cari Clement from Caron yarns. She knows her stuff, and gets the type of young, funky designs I love. I also really appreciate their work with Rwanda Knits. I've used Caron Simply Soft for Skoodies in the past. It makes for a lovely supple cuddly light weight Skoodie. It is so great to know a face behind their designs and yarns.

I also met with Bobbie Matela of Coats and Clark. They make Red Heart yarn which will always have a special place in my heart. It's the yarn I first learned to crochet and knit with and I think their website puts it perfectly... "yarn and designs for real life." You can find Coats and Clarks products everywhere and you can always count on them for sturdy "real life" projects. In fact, I think the first scarf I ever sold was made with red Light and Lofty. Bobbie was the first person I met with at the designer meet and greet and she was super informative and so encouraging.

My Secret Pal sent me the happiest gift! 2 candles (citrus and lavender which I love) and this!!!

I had a hard time getting a pic of this needle felted sheep kit... but look what I made... so cute!

His heads a little bigger than they suggested, and I did the legs differently, but I love him! If I ever have my own shop he will be such a happy addition to our checkout desk! But, for now, he'll just be making me happy in my little NYC apartment.

So... I've been doing a 3 month knitting/crocheting gift exchange. I've had a great time. My first package arrived a few days ago. She sent me some beautiful brown yarn, which I LOVE! I've worked with bamboo and wool before, but never with a bamboo wool blend. She also sent some wool friendly soap which (I hate to admit) I've never used. But, I'm sure once I start, I will be hooked. She suggested a cowl or hat with this yarn and I definitely think I'll embark on a detailed knit cowl. I have a few projects to finish first, but I'll be sure to post pics when I put it on my needles.

Kids Krochet

As you'd imagine, there are kids that travel with us on the Chitty tour. One of the girls, Aly Brier, has been interested in crocheting since day one. I love kids, and I have worked with a few that I still keep in touch with. Aly will definitely be on the top of that list. AND... as of last Saturday, she officially Crochets!

Her birthday is coming up, so I decided I wanted to take her out on a special Birthday date, and finally teach her to crochet. We had so much fun, and she seriously has a knack for working with yarn. She picked it up so well and really seemed to love it. We already have a date planned to go to a shop in NYC so she can get yarn to make an AFGAN as a gift for a family member. How great is that?

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I love so many yarns. This is too hard! As for what I don’t like, I am not into yarn that is crazy furry or eyelash yarns. This week I’ve really been enjoying Frog Tree Alpaca. I love earthy colors.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I have two pencil cases for small hooks and needles and a large plastic needle case for my longer needles. I keep my circulars loosely in a bag with other notions

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I’ve been crocheting for 10 years and knitting for 1. I’d consider myself an advanced crocheter, and a good beginning knitter. I could probably do more than I give myself credit for, but I loose patience with following knitting patterns pretty quickly. I love to create as I go.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

No – I should look into that.

5. What's your favorite scent?

I love orange and lavender candles. When I wear perfume I wear earthy herbal sents.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

Black liquorice, and ginger. I guess I like candy with bite.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

I don’t spin, but I’d love to learn how. I needle felt, and have started some wet felting. I’m interested in crafts of all kinds, especially crafting that can be done on the road.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I have a Mac and I use Itunes. I love folky music with lyrics that really mean something. I like lyrics that make you think. David Wilcox is my all time favorite songwriter.

I’ve been in a purpley blueish mood lately. I also love brown. I guess I tend to stay away from really bright colors.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

No pets. I’ve recently developed a cat allergy, which makes me sad. I love all animals. I am recently engaged and (when I’m not on the road doing a musical) I live in a 400 sq foot studio in NYC with my fiancé.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

Yes.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Patterns that don’t include seams or sewing : ) I also love patterns that combine knitting and crocheting

13. What are you knitting right now?

I started my first Raglan sweater recently… with lace weight yarn, so it’s taking forever. I’m also crocheting a hooded scarf (a skoodie) for a friend.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

My favorite are Lantern moon wooden needles. I love circulars.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

No : ( I’ve almost bought one several times, but I always give in to the power of my own self winding.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?

Oooooo good question. I’m sure I have some in my storage unit that are super old, but us of now this darn raglan sweater has me stumped. I think I made a mistake and I can’t find the pattern. Ugh… I started it several months ago.

18. What is your favorite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe?

I think New Years Eve might be my favorite holiday. I was raised Catholic, so I celebrate Christmas, but I’ve been to a few Sedars (which are clearly not celebrated during the winter) and I really would love to continue celebrating during Passover. Such a fantastic tradition.

19. Is there anything that you collect?

Vintage purses/hats clothses/earings/buttons/records/dishes I am also addicted to Anthropologie and I’m very grateful they have a sale section.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

Being an actor who lives on the road makes it hard to commit to a subscription. I do like to pic up mags here and there. I have to be careful with books… they are so heavy, but I love them.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?

I’m going to the Knit and Crochet Show in Buffalo this year. I am taking 4 classes. I’ve never taken a formal class, so I’m freaked and excited.

I wear a 8 ½ shoe. I’ve never made socks. I tend to work with thicker yarn. I do have a pair a friend made me… I love them!

Make a Change

After our second show in Dallas Texas I ended up winding down in my good friend John's room. Some how we ended up talking about movies/tv shows that influenced us as children. He showed me YouTube clips of Dot and Kangaroo. A lovely little show with music and cartoons mixed with live clips from the Australian outback. I in turn showed him my all time favorite childhood/teenage obsession Captain EO (click here for the first half and here for the second half, which has the music and dancing). Captain EO, a 3D movie at Disneyland staring Michael Jackson and Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, ran from 1986-1997. Living in Anaheim, I had a year round pass to the park, and Captain EO was a staple in my life. John and I watched the 20 minute film and reminisced about how RIDICULOUSLY talented Michael Jackson was and how truly sad he seemed now. It seemed such a shame that someone who has influenced so many people all over the world should be driven to such a sad state. What brought us all so much joy and gave us some many wonderful memories also seemed to be what fueled his depression and seemingly lonely life. We had no idea that the next day we would learn he had passed away.

I still can't believe he is gone. I know EVERYONE was affected by him. We all have memories that we associate with his music, amazing ability as a performer. While everyone turns his death into a crazy circus, I thought I'd share some of my favorite memories.

When I was 5 years old I fully believed that he was my best friend. My mom loves to tell the story of how I burst into tears when she shut the car door. As she struggled to find out what had happened, I quickly informed her she had not let Michael into the car. Hahaha... what a crazy kid! My mom, never one to burst a bubble, lovingly opened the door and let him join me in the car. Thanks, Mom.

A few years later, my aunt says, we walked into a shopping center and I stopped dead in my tracks, grabbed my chest as if I couldn't breathe. She was very worried until she realized I had stopped because I spotted a poster of MJ and, clearly my heart skipped a beat. I was OB-SESSED.

Then... came Captain EO. I often try to explain the glory of this film. When I meet people who have seen it, there is always a spark of excitement. When I was in high school I found a VH1 special that showed the rehearsal process for the big dance number "We are Here to Change the World." I watched that video with painstaking diligence and recorded each step into a notebook. I then proceeded to teach the dance to the entire Associate Student Body leadership team. It was really amazing. We even made shirts that looked like the shirt he wears under his space suit that read "We are here to change the world" on the back. I still think it was a pretty brilliant idea. And... it was so much fun! Captain EO closed when I was 17, and I'll never forget how sad I was when it was replaced by "Honey I Shrunk the Audience."

THEN... in 2003 my sister and I went to visit a friend who was working at Universal Studios in the Terminator stunt show. As we waited outside to go in to see his show I got a phone call. My friend had stepped backstage on a quick break to tell me that MICHAEL JACKSON was in the audience of his show. My friend told me where he would be exiting. My sis and I freaked. We ran straight into a shop to buy a pen and headed toward the back of the theatre. I am not usually one to approach celebrities. I feel like it is invasive and I think they should be able to live their lives without being attacked by swarms of people. BUT this was Michael Jackson. His life was far from normal, and he had meant so much to me. We spotted him with a few friends and few security guards. We got his autograph on the back of a ticket stub and my sis clicked a great close up pic of he and me. I spoke to him about Captain EO, he was super sweet, a little weird (of course) and very gracious. I still feel so bad about not taking a pic of my sis with him. But, I think you can see her face in the reflection of his sun glasses.

A few days have passed since the news of his death was confirmed. I know I didn't "know" him. But, it still feels so strange knowing he is gone. I know it seemed as if the Michael Jackson we all loved has been gone for quite some time now, but he was still a force bringing new ideas to the entertainment world. It's so sad knowing his upcoming tour will not happen. I don't think the world has ever seen nor will we ever see an entertainer who compares.

Salty Highlights

Here's a few of the Highlights from Salt Lake....

I found several great Vintage Clothing/Antiques Shops.

This pic is from a shop called Retro Rose. It's located at 207 E Broadway. Everything in the shop was organized by color which I loved. Loads and loads of antiques painted all over the shop.

I also went to a new Vintage Clothing store called Misc. (pronounced Missy) which is attached to a Vintage Mondern Furniture store called The Green Ant. I had such a great talk with Missy about how she opened her shop and owning her own business. It is so clear that having a great personality really gets you a long way as a business owner. I highly recommend her shop. She has some truly great finds ( including several great vintage bathing suits).

The last shop I went to was Jitter Bug Antiques & Collectables. This small packed shop proved lucky for me. Not only did I find loads of Vintage Clip on Earrings to use for my new vintage/felted jewelry, I also found an authentic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang replica! It's missing Potts and the Kids, but Truly Scrumptious is there waving in all her glory.

This and the next few pictures are sights I saw as I strolled through Downtown on my last day in Salt Lake City. So beautiful!

This Violin Making School was a definite gem. The shop windows were filled with half finished Violins. I felt like I was on one of Mr. Rogers' field trips. No one was there, but it was clearly so full of life.

Thanks Salt Lake City for a great week! Now... on to Tempe.

Honoring a Great Man

I was in a hotel room in Atlanta when I learned that legendary Lindy Hopper, Frankie Manning

had passed away at the age of 94. Frankie was one of the original Lindy Hoppers in the Savoy Ballroom and a member of a group that called Whitey's Lindy Hoppers. He can be seen in many films, including A Day at the Races, and Hellzapopin. After taking a long break from dancing, he hit the floor again in the 80's and began spreading his passion for the dance. He toured the world teaching, choreographing, telling stories, and spreading his love of life Lindy.

I began swing dancing (mainly Lindy Hop) in 1996. My highschool weekends were spent in vintage clothes swinging out in front of live band and eating pasta. My passion for the dance

even took me to a 2 week camp in Sweeden. I've been lucky enough to see him in person a few times and he has been a constant symbol of joy, life and general kick-buttedness. I don't get many chances to dance socially these days, but when I do, it always feels like home.

Frankie passed away April 27th, and I was not scheduled to be back in NYC for another few weeks. So, I had to miss the funeral service. However, I was able to attend (with my friend and fellow long time Lindy Hopper, Jen Brooks) the Memorial Service that was held as a part of Frankie's 95 Birthday Celebration. I know that my words can not do the service justice. It was a perfect memorial filled with stories, laughter, gratitude, music and of course dance. After the service at 5th Ave Presbyterian, we followed Dave Otswalds Gully Low Jazz Band in a traditional New Orleans Style 2nd Line procession that ended with a dance at the Bandshell in Central Park. I felt so proud to be a part of the GIGANTIC group holding parasols, scarves and pictures of Frankie through the streets of NYC. Jen and stayed and danced in the park for a bit, and then went to another dance at the Hammerstein Ballroom. It was a great day.

As I said, I don't get a chance to dance much now.... but I can't deny that the years I spent social dancing have shaped all that I am and all that I do now. I often seek to fill my life with joy, improvisation and general kookiness. I know the days I spent swinging out for hours on end lit a light in my heart that will never go out.

Thank you, Frankie, for all of the joy you've spread. I, for one, will do my best to continue to spread it with your smile in my heart.

I had a wonderful 3 week lay-off. I spent the first week in California, the second in NYC and the third in the Caribbean. Not too shabby. We re-opened the show in Albuquerque and we are now back in the swing of things with 2 new cast members in Salt Lake City. I'm making a commitment to post more often and I have lots and lots to share. Here's a few highlights from the vaca.

CAN YOU HANDLE THIS FACE!!!!! Little Lucia is the beautiful daughter of two of my very dear friends, Melissa and Ozzy. I can not handle how cute she is, and I'm so glad I was able to see her in California.

PROJECT BRIDEWAY! My beautiful sister (the tall blonde) is getting MARRIED! Super fun Shower.

Of course, I had to sport some "Molly Made" items on the cruise. I made this flower headband with my sis in mind. I hope to start a white bride inspired line. BUT.... my man said it looks like an egg... so now, all I can think is EGG HEAD when I see this picture. Thanks mister.

I made these earwarming headbands for Marvin (on the left) and Richard (not pictured). I also made one for Skip's lady Tara. But I know Skip really wanted the flowered headband for himself.

Here's a few of my favorite Cell Phone pics from our road trip.

We stopped at a little Mexican place in Amarillo, Texas, and they had flavor shots for sodas! I don't drink soda often, but sometimes a good ol' fashion Vanilla Coke does the trick.

The sign said this was the Largest Cross in the WORLD! I don't know if I believe that, but it was pretty big..... and in the middle of NOWHERE!
This is my official vacation project. Never mind the fact that I've also finished 2 shrugs and a puppy hat on this leg of our vaca..... this is the official project that will eventually come with us on our cruise. I'm still new to knitting, so this is super exciting for me. My first top down sweater, and my first go at double pointed needles! Look at that... IT'S A SLEEVE!

My cell phone camera doesn't do this sunset justice, but I still thought the contrast between the dark land and the crisp sky was pretty sweet. Day 2 of our cross country drive is done... now... on to day 3.

On the Road

It's been too long since I've visited my blog. I was super excited yesterday, because I thought I figured out how to post a blog from my phone! As it turns out - it didn't work. wa wahhh - oh well, this is the post I intended to make yesterday : )

The show is now on a much needed break. We've had this three week lay-off scheduled since the begining of our contract. Although, the idea unemployment is not

fantastic.... 3 weeks without tights, pin curls, wigs, fake eyelashes, or heels is MAGICAL!
We're starting our vaca by driving from Kentucky to

California. Yesterday, we drove about 10 hours. I crocheted another little
pre-wedding gifty for my sis...

and... a Rasta hat for my sis's dog! She and her fiance asked for one... I think it looks more like a chef hat, but, hopefully once Tanks little beagle head is under it, we'll all be singing songs of freedom.
Last night, we had dinner at a lovely Waffle House and stayed at a glamourous Motel 6. In the morning we found a Starbucks in an Oklahoma City Mall. It was at that Starbucks when I heard my favorite road trip quote so far.

Elderly Oklahomian: I'll have a... a... grande... a whaddya call it... le-TAH?
His son: NO! It's a le-TAY! Uh... I mean LA-tay

Bless the Oklahoma latte men! They made me smile.

YARN STORE KETCHUP, Philly and Atlanta

I've been crazy busy seeing loads of amazing places all over the country. Here's a few of the fiber highlights.

3 GREAT YARN SHOPS PHILLY.

ROSIE'S YARN CELLER

This is the first shop I visited. I walked by it twice without seeing it, which I couldn't believe. It is... like the title says... a cellar. Nice shop packed with loads of skeins to please all. The staff was helpful, and obviously very passionate about their craft. I'm sure I would frequent this shop. It's a little cramped... but great for treasure hunting. I spent quite some time digging through their sale basket.

I'm so sad I wasn't able to spend more time in this shop. It was very clean, bright and spacious. I literally had 10 minutes tops to run through their shop, so my

memory of what they have is fuzzy, but I did end up with a great little project bag by Blue Sky Alpacas, and some wonderful roving for felting. This flower is one of the many flowers I've made from the roving bag I bought at loop. I loved the

natural rustic color combo.

NANGELLINI

Two of the gals in my cast found this shop and recommend it, so I ran down between shows on our last day in town. I am so glad I did. It was crazy full of fiber and color. The owner, Nancy, clearly had a zest for life and a passion for fiber. She excitedly took me up to the sale section of her shop, and then showed me how everything was organized. I don't know if I have ever encountered a more helpful yarn shop owner/employee. Like I said, this shop was FILLED with color, some things that were a bit too bright for me, but I so appreciated the time and passion that went into the display. My favorite part was a collection of yarns Nancy had paired and wound and was selling together. I often mix 2 or more skeins, but I've never thought of having them wound together at a shop. She sells pairings that she suggests, or will wind combos of your own. Why have I never seen this at a shop? Great idea! I bought two of her combos and made one of my own. I love them so

much, I might not ever bring myself to knit or crochet them. I'm sure someday they'll tell me what they want to be.

ONE GLORIOUS SHOP IN ATLANTA

Hands down.... THIS IS THE GREATEST YARN SHOP I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED! Just the building was enough to make me squeal. Exposed brick, rustic wood, and a spiral staircase leading from the first floor to the second floor. As you enter the gate, this lovely creature greats you. Then, a large pot of their own coffee brew welcomes you as you step into the shop. The first floor was PACKED with all kinds of wool yarns. And, a nice little felting section with unspun fiber. (including lots died by local artists) The second floor has cotton, acrylic, and a WALL OF WASHER/DRYERS for rent so you can satisfy all of your felting needs. What? I don't have a washer/dryer in my apartment, and obviously don't have one on the road

. I've tried this whole felting in the bathtub thing and it's a messy pain the butt! A shop like this would be so amazing! I ended up leaving with some super soft Blue Sky Cotton, and a shirt that makes me so happy. I wanted to buy another for a friend, but it was the last of it's kind. I found it online at CafePress. I've already been approached by friends who think it's some sort of dietary yoga message. I know those who really get what I get, will get it too.

Visiting these yarn shops around the country has made me so happy. It is so inspiring to see so many places around the country that are thriving and bringing wooly goodness to their community's. I really hope that some day, I can do the same.

PHANTASTIC PHILLY PHRIENDS AND PHLOWERS

Philly has been a crazy whirlwind week! I began the week teaching two classes through a great company called Broadway Connection. I really do miss teaching. The kids were great! Several of the
students also came to the show. I gave them a backstage tour and they were so excited. Luckily my fellow cast mates were good sports. Dirk Lumbard (who plays Boris) stood there and smiled while they all took close up shots of his face. It was so funny. Once they had their fill of Dirk they all began begging for the Child Catcher. Luckily, Oliver Wadsworth was still around. He was a great sport too. The kids were so happy to get autographs, pictures, and to see how the car flies. I went straight from teaching on Wednesday to a Seder. It was my second Seder and I have to say... it was absolutely fantastic! It was lead by Rabbi Jonathan Blake (the husband of our Truly

Scrumptious, Kelly McCormick). I know so little about the Jewish faith but what I do know, I really love. Durring the Seder I was reminded of one of my favorite Buddhist quotes - "Believe nothing, no matter who says it, even if I say it, unless it resides within your own heart and your own reason." I love the idea of being able to question religion and the idea of actually getting answers. There were several people of different faiths at the Seder, and I really believe

everyone learned something. Jonathan brought his guitar and several silly items to help explain Passover. I'm so glad we were able to participate. I hope this Seder was the second of many that we will attend.

I also had some AMAZING friends come out from NYC to see the show and hang in Philly. Sal Sabella and I spent all day Friday walking the entire city. The murals around this town are out of control! Every time we turned the corner, another huge display of art would whack us in the face. So cool! The most amazing was definitely Philadelphia's Magic Garden. According to their website. The Magic Garden mosaic murals span all over the city. It reminded me of the

Hundertwasser House in Vienna, Austria. I especially loved the mirrored bits, because the reflections change depending on where you stand, causing the whole mural itself to change. In one of the pictures I took, I managed to get the reflection of our eyes. We had such a great day. On Sunday my amazing besty of about 12 years, Melissa Cullen, came out with her beau

Roger Smith. We shared lunch between shows with great food, and great company. I've felt so lucky having JD on the road with me for the past few weeks. Being able to spend time with JD and a few of our friends made it even more sweet.

What impressed me most about Philly (aside from the yarn shops which I will get to in another post) was not the art that humans created... but the art that naturally grew on the trees. I have never seen such amazing blooms and they were everywhere. It's like God decided to remind us the reason for the Passover/Easter season. The trees were screaming look at me, I'm GORGEOUS, and I'm just here to make you smile.

In my mind I'm going to Carolina

This week, the tour took us to Raleigh, North Carolina. The whole week was filled with loveliness. Dirk Lumbard, a friend in the cast had us over to his house in the country. He and his partner, Andy Ferrell have the most elegant, beautiful home! I've included a few pictures which, really, just don't even begin to do it justice. We spent the day on porch swings, in rocking chairs, and ate a perfect home cooked meal. It's so strange how much we miss the simple things, like having a kitchen.

I also was able to make it to a shop I'd been looking forward to checking out called Panopolie. I don't think I've ever seen a shop like it. Half of the shop was a normal bead store, but the rest of the shop and so many specialty craft items. Scrapbook items, little glass window boxes, loads of roving, metal working materials, watch parts, charms, vintage watch clasps, keys, and loads and loads of charms. They offer classes and were very helpful. The gal behind the counter's name was Mollie. She was super sweet and said she might come to the show.

I have roving with me on the road, and I've felted a bit, but the roving I bought here inspired me to make these little felted flower headbands. They've made me so happy. I've started posted them on Etsy and I'll be sure to post more soon.

We head to Philadelphia on Monday. I'm sure it will be great, but I'm seriously not looking forward to leaving the 70 degree weather or the Southern hospitality we've enjoyed in Raleigh.
